TikTok has 6 months to comply or face suspension of the transfers, though an Irish court has paused the order pending appeal
A ruling issued in April 2025 by Ireland's Data Protection Commission determined that TikTok's handling of European Economic Area user data fell short of GDPR standards, specifically regarding remote-access transfers of that data to China, NBC News reported.
TikTok was given a six-month window to remediate the transfers under the commission's order; absent such remediation, those transfers face a full suspension.
An appeal challenging the commission's decision has been filed by TikTok in the Irish court system. Pending that appeal, Ireland's High Court has placed a hold on enforcement of the order, leaving the data transfers uninterrupted while litigation continues, according to NBC News.
TikTok has publicly rejected the commission's conclusions.
