Jeff Metcalf, the father of stabbing victim Austin Metcalf, spoke publicly for the first time after a Texas jury convicted Karmelo Anthony of murder and sentenced him to 35 years in prison, saying that when he got up the day after the verdict, a sense of calm came over him that had been absent for more than a year.
"When I woke up, I felt like one million pounds had been lifted off my shoulders," Jeff Metcalf told CBS News Texas. Though he called the outcome bittersweet, Jeff Metcalf said forgiving Anthony was a decision he made for himself rather than for the convicted killer. "Forgiveness was not for him. Forgiveness was for me. So I don't carry the rage, the hate, and that around; it will eat me up like cancer," he said, according to CBS News Texas.
