Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday that he will remain on the central bank's Board of Governors after his term as chair ends on May 15. The move would mark the first such instance of a departing Fed chair remaining on the board since 1948. And it would be a blow to President Donald Trump, who has mounted a relentless pressure campaign to get Powell to lower interest rates, and would be deprived of the chance to nominate someone to replace Powell at the Fed.
"My decisions on these matters will continue to be guided entirely by what I believe is in the best interest of the institution and the people we serve after my term as chair ends on May 15, and will continue to serve as a governor for a period of time to be determined," Powell said during his new conference after the Fed again decided to keep interest rates steady.
