The free app records doctor visits and generates plain-language summaries, building a personal health record patients can share with caregivers

Kin Health raised $9 million in seed funding to build an AI-powered app that records physician appointments and converts them into plain-language summaries patients can act on and share. Maveron led the round, with participation from Town Hall Ventures, Flex Capital, Eniac Ventures, The Family Fund, Pear VC, Watershed Ventures, and Foundry Square $SQ Capital, among others.
During a doctor visit, patients use the app to capture the conversation; once the appointment ends, they receive a summary that includes recommended next steps. According to TechCrunch, producing each summary involves multiple processing steps, moving from a raw transcript to a clinical narrative before arriving at a version written for patients; specialized medical AI models underpin the work throughout. By default, summaries are visible only to the patient, and all data is encrypted. Although the product is patient-facing and therefore falls outside HIPAA certification requirements, the company says its privacy practices meet the same standards, according to TechCrunch.
The company was founded by physicians Arpan Parikh and Amit Parikh, along with Kyle Alwyn, who previously built online prescription service HeyDoctor and sold it to GoodRx. GoodRx co-founders Doug Hirsch and Trevor Bezdek serve as founding partners and executive chairmen. More than 30 physicians also participated in the seed round.
Kin Health's founders point to a gap in how healthcare technology has developed. Ambient AI scribes that record and document visits for physicians now see 75% to 90% adoption within major health systems, the company said. No equivalent product has existed for patients, who, according to research cited by Kin Health, accurately recall only 49% of decisions and recommendations from medical visits — a figure that falls to 38% for patients without a high school education.
"The most important moment in a patient's care is the conversation with their doctor. Everything else — adherence, follow-through, outcomes — flows from whether they understood it," Arpan Parikh, who serves as CEO, said in a statement.
As patients use the app across multiple appointments, Kin Health says it will build a longitudinal health record based on what their doctors said. The company plans to integrate data from electronic health record systems later this year, according to TechCrunch.
Instead of charging users, Kin Health plans to make money when appointments lead to referrals for services like specialist visits, lab work, or prescriptions. This approach is similar to how GoodRx grew its business by offering a free core product and earning commissions on related services.
"We spent a decade proving that consumer health could be a real business without charging patients," Doug Hirsch said in a statement. "Kin is the next version of that thesis, starting earlier in the care journey."
Maveron partner Natalie Dillon said that patients in the U.S. have about one billion doctor visits each year, but leave without a reliable record of what was discussed. Kin Health plans to use the new funding to grow its consumer product, improve health record features, and develop care navigation tools.
