Kroger announced Wednesday that its rewards program members can now redeem points for discounts on groceries, expanding a program that had given members points redeemable for fuel savings.
Grocery discounts are calculated at a rate of $1 off per 100 points, and shoppers cannot exceed $10 in point-based savings on any single day. Applying the discount requires shoppers to sign into their Kroger account and select the points they want to use prior to finishing their transaction, whether through the website or mobile app. Points can still be applied toward fuel, knocking 10 cents off the per-gallon price for each 100-point increment, with a ceiling of $1 off per gallon.
The program's name is also changing: What was previously called "Fuel Points" will now simply be called "Points," the company said.
Using a Kroger rewards card generates one point per dollar across qualifying in-store transactions as well as pickup and delivery orders. Gift card purchases, certain prescriptions, and periodic promotions are additional avenues through which members can accumulate points.
"We're excited to help customers stretch their budgets and give more choices in how they use the rewards they earn shopping with us," said Megan Shaffer, group vice president of customer growth and strategy at Kroger, in a statement. "Whether they're saving up to $35 on their next fill-up or taking dollars off their grocery bill, customers can now choose the savings that matter most to them."
Kroger also announced several summer promotions that allow members to accumulate points faster. Quadruple points are available on Fridays through July 24, with the same multiplier applying during the July 1 through July 4 holiday window. Private Selection products carry their own quadruple-points digital coupon, valid through July 18.
Boost subscribers retain their existing perks, which include earning points at twice the standard rate on qualifying purchases and access to free grocery delivery.
Quartz has previously ranked Kroger's rewards program among the top grocery loyalty programs in the country, noting the program's personalized deals, digital coupons, and fuel savings options. The expansion to include grocery discounts directly addresses one of the program's previous limitations — its redemption flexibility had been tied largely to fuel purchases.
Kroger serves more than 11 million customers daily through retail stores and e-commerce, the company said.
