Lebanon death toll tops 3,000 amid continued Israeli strikes

At least 19 people died in Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon the day after the country's health ministry confirmed the cumulative death toll from fighting between Israel and Hezbollah had crossed 3,000, according to The Associated Press.

Among the 3,020 fatalities recorded by the ministry were 211 children and 292 women, according to the AP. The subsequent day's strikes brought further casualties across several southern locations.

Ten people died when a strike hit the village of Deir Qanoun al Nahr in Tyre province along the coast, three of them children and three women; a child was among the three people wounded. Four more people were killed and 10 wounded in Nabatieh, while five others died in a separate attack on Kfar Sir, a village in the same area, according to the AP.

In the span between Monday and Tuesday afternoon, the Israeli military reported striking over 25 Hezbollah infrastructure locations across southern Lebanon, according to the AP. The death of an Israeli soldier during Tuesday's fighting in southern Lebanon pushed the total troop fatalities on the Israeli side since the conflict's start to 21, according to the AP.

Two days before the latest casualties, Israel and Lebanon agreed to a 45-day extension of their U.S.-brokered ceasefire, which had been in effect since April 17, and set May 29 as the date for military delegations to meet for direct negotiations, according to the AP. Hostilities have persisted regardless, with Israeli forces conducting strikes they describe as aimed at preventing Hezbollah from rearming, while Hezbollah has kept up drone assaults on Israeli troops stationed in Lebanon and communities along the northern border.

Though even Lebanon's own government has called on Hezbollah to lay down its arms, the group has refused, and it remains outside the Washington-based ceasefire talks entirely. For their part, Israeli officials have cast the negotiations as a pathway to eventual diplomatic normalization, a framing Lebanese officials have rejected; Beirut's position centers on securing an armistice tied to an Israeli military pullout, according to the AP.
