Lidl U.S. recalled all units of its Eridanous Shortbread Cookies with Chocolate Truffle Coating & Apricot Filling after discovering the products carried foreign-language packaging that omitted English ingredient lists, nutrition facts, and allergen declarations.
The cookies contain wheat, soy, milk, and egg — none of which were declared in English on the affected packages. The company said people with an allergy or sensitivity to any of those ingredients face the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall, Lidl said.
The recall covers 11.6-ounce (330-gram) boxes with UPC 4056489125839. The affected products were distributed between July 15 and July 22 to Lidl stores in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia.
Lidl said it initiated the recall after identifying the foreign-language packaging. Federal law requires packaged foods sold in the U.S. to clearly identify the presence of major food allergens in English.
Customers who have an allergy or sensitivity to wheat, soy, milk, or eggs should not consume the product, the company said. Those who purchased the cookies can either discard them or return them to any Lidl store for a full refund; a receipt is not required. Customers with questions can reach the Lidl U.S. Customer Care Hotline at (844) 747-5435, Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
"Lidl U.S. regrets any inconvenience related to this voluntary recall," the company said in a statement.
