Three people were injured Monday evening when a bomb went off at a residential building in Monaco, setting off a police search for a suspect seen leaving the area, according to The Guardian.
Mirmand told The Guardian that the bomb left a couple, thought to be in their 50s or 60s, fighting for their lives. A teenager, 13 years old and believed to be connected to the pair, escaped with less severe injuries. Officials said the device appeared to have been packed with bolts and buckshot.
According to The Guardian, CCTV footage captured a person placing a backpack near the building's entrance before walking away toward France. Prosecutor General Thibault Stéphane confirmed that whoever was responsible had deposited a bag or package in the lobby prior to the blast. As of Monday, investigators had not identified any clear reason the building was chosen as a target.
Mirmand described the incident as "very likely an attack." It occurred around 9:00 p.m. local time on a street near the frontier between Monaco and France. The device was described as a "parcel bomb" by BFM TV, citing the principality's prosecutor general.
Speaking to reporters, Mirmand said he believed nothing like this had ever occurred before in Monaco. The tiny principality, tucked along the French Riviera, has long attracted wealthy residents and is widely regarded as a refuge for the ultra-rich.
Update, June 30, 2026: French authorities have deployed approximately 40 soldiers and two helicopters to assist in the manhunt, with the suspect believed to have fled to Beausoleil, a French town on the border with Monaco. (per Reuters)
