The most reliable used EVs, according to Consumer Reports

The used EV market is growing, especially as leases signed during the days of Inflation Reduction Act rebates are set to expire.

But which used EVs are the most reliable? 

“EVs are often based on all-new platforms with unproven powertrains and other fresh features, which make them a potential reliability concern,” Consumer Reports said. That’s why its experts compiled a list of used EVs it recommends.

Priced between $13,950 and $14,775, the Bolt delivered around 250 miles of real-world range in CR's testing. CR praised it as one of the first "budget-friendly EVs with a practical driving range." It runs on a 200-hp motor and just 30 minutes of DC fast charging can add 100 miles to your battery.

The 2022 Leaf starts between $10,900 and $13,875. The standard model covers about 149 miles per charge, while the larger Leaf Plus can go 215 miles. CR notes the Leaf "accelerates decisively," and its E-Pedal feature slows the car automatically when you lift off the gas, sending energy back to the battery.

Ranging from $21,400 to $28,050, the Model 3 offers an EPA-estimated 263 to 353 miles depending on the version. In corners, CR says it "feels like a well-tuned sports car." In testing, CR matched the EPA's 310-mile rating and pushed it all the way to 350 miles with regenerative braking.

The Mach-E is priced from $23,900 to $32,425, and the extended-range AWD version reaches about 270 miles on a charge. CR describes its handling as "taut and agile, with quick steering." It sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds, and every version comes standard with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning, and rear cross-traffic warning.

Priced between $16,150 and $23,925, the Ariya covered 253 miles in CR's own highway range test with the larger 87-kWh battery. CR finds it "quick, quiet, and roomy," though it flags the onboard charger as slower than the competition, adding only about 20 miles of range per hour at home.

The 2025 Solterra runs between $22,725 and $24,925, with an estimated range of 222 miles. CR says "power delivery is smooth and predictable." Unlike many EVs, AWD comes standard — front and rear motors are included — and the full suite of safety features like automatic emergency braking and blind spot warning are standard across the lineup.

Priced from $23,625 to $29,775, the AWD Long Range Model Y earns an EPA-estimated 326 miles per charge. CR notes it is "taller and roomier than the Model 3," with significantly better rear-seat space. It seats five as standard, but a seven-seat option is also available.

The bZ4X ranges from $37,070 to $43,880. The front-wheel-drive version is EPA-rated at 252 miles, while the AWD trim is rated at 222 miles. CR calls it "a functional SUV with agile handling and a decent ride," and notes it is essentially the same vehicle as the Subaru Solterra.

Priced between $24,750 and $31,825, the rear-wheel-drive eDrive40 version is estimated to travel 307 to 333 miles per charge depending on wheel size. CR praises the front seats as "comfortable and supportive, with generous seatback side bolsters."

Priced from $42,650 to $51,400, the iX delivered an impressive 370 miles in CR's highway range test — well beyond its EPA estimate. CR describes it as "speedy, ultraquiet, and has a cushy ride."

The Lexus RZ is priced between $25,700 and $27,700, and while the EPA rates it at 220 miles, CR's own highway test yielded 202. CR says "the cabin is quiet and up to typical Lexus snuff." It shares its platform with the Toyota $TM bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, but steps up with 308 hp from dual electric motors and a more luxe interior.
