Spirit Airlines shuts down after rescue deal collapses

Spirit Airlines began an orderly wind-down of operations on Saturday, canceling all flights and ending more than three decades as a U.S. carrier. Roughly 17,000 people stand to lose their jobs, according to CNN, a figure that encompasses 14,000 Spirit employees alongside thousands of contractors.

The shutdown came after a government rescue package fell apart. Spirit had been in discussions with the Trump administration on a deal worth up to $500 million, but a key group of creditors rejected the proposed terms, according to CNN. President Donald Trump acknowledged Friday that a deal might not be possible. "Well, we're looking at it — but if we can't make a good deal, no institution's been able to do it," he told CNN. "I'd like to save the jobs, but we'll have an announcement sometime today. We gave them a final proposal."

Spirit had reached a restructuring agreement with bondholders in March 2026, but the company said that plan could not be completed in the face of a sharp increase in oil prices and other business pressures. Financial stakeholders named in the wind-down announcement include Citadel, Cyrus Capital, and Ares Management Corp.

The collapse of the Spirit bailout talks capped a long deterioration. The airline had filed for bankruptcy a second time in August 2025, after losing almost $257 million following its exit from a first bankruptcy in March of that year. Its finances were further strained by a spike in jet fuel prices tied to the conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, which threatened to push Spirit's projected 2026 operating margin from negative 7% to negative 20%. A possible liquidation had been reported as early as mid-April, as fuel costs mounted and the restructuring plan appeared increasingly unlikely to hold.

No major U.S. airline has collapsed under financial pressure in the past quarter century — a distinction that now belongs to Spirit. The last time a comparable U.S. carrier disappeared entirely was when Midway Airlines folded in the immediate aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Travelers $TRV who booked directly through Spirit using a credit or debit card are in line for automatic refunds, the airline said, while anyone who paid via vouchers, credits, or Free Spirit points will have to wait for the bankruptcy court process to determine whether any recovery is possible. Spirit told customers to stay away from airports, adding that arranging seats on other airlines falls outside what the company is able to do.

At a news conference, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that four carriers — United, Delta, JetBlue, and Southwest — have agreed to hold one-way fares for displaced Spirit travelers to roughly $200. Separately, Frontier is cutting its base fares in half across all routes, an offer running through May 10.

Data from aviation analytics firm Cirium, as cited by CNN, tallied almost 9,000 Spirit departures on the books between May 2 and month's end — seats amounting to 1.8 million reservations now left without a flight.
