An electrical issue in the power steering pump wiring could cause combustible materials to overheat, Stellantis said

Stellantis $STLA is recalling an estimated 1,076,999 U.S. vehicles — model-year 2021–2025 Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator trucks — over an electrical issue that could start a vehicle fire. The company is urging owners to park away from structures and other vehicles until a repair is available.
At the center of the recall is a wiring defect tied to the electric hydraulic power steering pump. Under certain conditions, the fault can generate enough heat in surrounding materials to trigger a fire, Stellantis said. The Wall Street Journal noted the fire risk can occur even when the vehicle is parked with the ignition off, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Remedies will vary by vehicle and may include work on the wiring harness, the electric hydraulic power steering pump, or both, the company said. A repair has not been finalized, though Stellantis anticipates having one ready by July; once available, dealerships will schedule service for customers who receive mailed notification.
One possible injury has been linked to the defect, though Reuters reported that Stellantis is aware of no accidents or deaths associated with it.
Outside the U.S., the action covers roughly 106,258 Canadian vehicles, 23,704 in Mexico, and around 124,297 in other regions worldwide, pushing the overall global count past 1.3 million.
The Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator recall is the latest in a series of safety actions involving Stellantis vehicles. A separate action earlier this year targeted 419,035 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L SUVs, where a software error raised concerns about delayed side airbag activation in a collision and the heightened injury risk that could result. Owners of those vehicles can have the occupant restraint controller module software updated at no cost through their dealers, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.
