Target $TGT is voluntarily recalling two lines of its Up & Up store-brand baby wipes after FDA testing identified bacterial contamination in product samples that can cause life-threatening infections in newborns and young children.
The recalled products are Up & Up Fragrance Free Baby Wipes, sold in 20-, 72-, 216-, 800-, and 1,200-count packages, and Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes, sold in 72-, 216-, and 800-count packages. Both were sold at Target stores across the U.S. and on Target.com, the company said.
FDA testing found the presence of Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli bacteria in product samples. Target said the recall was also triggered by customer complaints about product discoloration. Because baby wipes are primarily used on newborns, infants, and young children, Target warned that this age group faces elevated risk — their still-developing immune systems make it harder to contain infection, raising the possibility that bacteria could enter the bloodstream and trigger sepsis or pneumonia. For adults without underlying health conditions, contact with contaminated wipes on broken or irritated skin would more typically produce a localized reaction.
Reports filed with both Target and manufacturer Sapro Temizlik Urunleri include complaints about the wipes changing color, along with accounts of skin irritation, eye irritation, and infections that customers believe may be connected to their use of the product. Those reports remain under investigation, the company said.
The recalled fragrance-free wipes have manufacturing date codes from November 7, 2025, to May 5, 2026, and expire between May 10, 2028, and November 5, 2028. The fresh cucumber scented wipes have manufacturing codes of December 29 or 30, 2025, and expire on June 29 or 30, 2028.
Anyone who purchased the affected wipes is urged to set them aside and bring them back to a Target location, where a full refund will be issued. Questions can be directed to Target Guest Relations by phone at 1-800-440-0680, available every day between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. CT.
