Its experts created a list of the best mid-size hybrid SUVs for under $50,000 in 2026. “Today’s hybrids are often superior to their conventionally powered siblings in nearly every way. That means consumers shopping for an SUV shouldn’t just consider a hybrid — they should focus solely on one,” CR said.
CR found that hybrid models were broadly more responsive, quieter, and had a smoother ride than their gas-powered siblings.

Priced between $44,490 and $48,890, the Crown Signia returns 37 mpg overall. It blends SUV practicality with a wagon-like feel, offering a smooth ride, an upscale interior, and strong fuel economy. CR likes the SUV a lot and recommends it to readers.

Priced between $41,860 to $59,775, you can only get lower trims of this three-row SUV for under $50,000. Still, it manages to get about 35 mpg overall, which is impressive for its size, and it stands out for a roomy third row.

With a starting price of $44,160 and reaching $58,780, only lower trims of this three-row SUV are available for under $50,000. The Palisade Hybrid delivers 26 mpg overall, much less than the Grand Highlander, but CR said it focuses more on power and interior comfort than efficiency, with a premium feel and strong acceleration.

Priced between $36,400 and $50,500, the Santa Fe Hybrid returns 34 mpg overall. It offers a steady ride, responsive handling, and a nice interior design, along with useful three-row flexibility.

At $45,870 to $55,275, the Highlander Hybrid achieves 35 mpg overall. Its smaller than the Grand Highlander but gets the same mileage. It delivers a smooth, controlled ride and strong efficiency, though its third row is tighter than some rivals.

Priced from $32,390 to $53,490, the Sorento Hybrid gets 28 mpg overall. It offers three rows in a smaller footprint, with a nice ride and quieter performance compared to the standard model, CR said.
