Trump is taking credit for Giant Eagle's summer grocery price cuts on 300 products

Trump wrote on Truth Social that Giant Eagle "will be lowering Prices, by a lot, across more than 300 products this Summer, through Labor Day, to help hardworking American families," framing the discounts as a response to his calls for lower consumer costs, according to The Hill. "Giant Eagle, like Walmart $WMT, is stepping up in a big and bold way to answer my call to lower costs for working families," he added.

The chain's promotion was already underway as of July 9, with an average price reduction of 10% applied to more than 300 items, lasting through Labor Day, according to Fox Business. The sale covers a range of categories, from meat and fresh produce to warm-weather snack foods. Among the specific price reductions, Certified Angus Beef 75% lean ground beef dropped from $6.69 to $5.99 per pound, and Smucker's Jelly fell from $4.79 to $2.99, according to Newsweek.

Trump also urged other grocery chains to follow suit. "Other Grocery Chains must immediately follow the lead of these absolute Patriots at Giant Eagle and Walmart," he wrote.

Walmart and Sam's Club had also rolled out their own summer savings initiative earlier this month, slashing prices across thousands of items spanning grocery staples, home goods, clothing and toys, according to Newsweek.

Giant Eagle's footprint spans northern Ohio, western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland and Indiana, where it runs 197 supermarkets. Kroger struck a $1.65 billion deal to buy the Pittsburgh-based chain on July 1, with closing targeted for 2027, subject to regulatory sign-off.

The Trump administration faces mounting public concern over consumer prices. A Harris Poll survey found that 95% of Americans say the country is in an affordability crisis, according to The Hill. A separate CNN poll found that 77% of Americans blame Trump for the rise in consumer costs. Annual inflation stood at 3.5% in June.
