The colleague you helped with a project three years ago, the former manager who moved to a different organization, the peer from an industry conference whom you stayed in touch with — these tend to produce the most value, because they are built on real interaction rather than a brief introduction and a business card exchange.
LinkedIn is a useful tool for maintaining visibility and loose connections — people who are not close enough for regular contact but who may become relevant in the future. The platform's value is not in the size of your connection count but in keeping a professional identity current and findable. A complete, accurate, up-to-date profile costs little and produces returns that are difficult to predict in advance.
The most underused aspect of relationship building is following up. After a conversation, a meeting, or a referral, a brief note — acknowledging the exchange, sharing something relevant, or simply expressing appreciation — is rare enough in professional contexts that it tends to be remembered. Most professionals neglect their networks not out of selfishness but because they have not made follow-up a habit. Building that habit, even at a low frequency, accumulates over years into a reputation for reliability and genuine regard.
Mentoring relationships deserve special mention. Having advisors who are further along in their careers — and eventually becoming one yourself — provides access to knowledge, perspective, and introductions that are not available any other way. Finding a mentor is less about formal programs and more about identifying people you respect, engaging with their work genuinely, and asking specific, thoughtful questions that are worth their time to answer.

Most people give feedback poorly. They are either too vague — "great job" or "this could be stronger" — or they deliver critique in a way that triggers defensiveness and shuts down learning. The SBI model, developed by the Center for Creative Leadership, offers a useful structure: describe the Situation, describe the Behavior you observed, and describe the Impact that behavior had. This framework keeps feedback specific, observable, and focused on effects rather than character — which makes it easier to receive and far more likely to be acted on.
Timely feedback is more useful than delayed feedback. The further a critique is from the relevant event, the harder it is for the recipient to connect it to what they actually did, and the more it can feel like a verdict rather than an observation. Building a habit of offering small pieces of feedback frequently — rather than saving it all for a formal annual review — normalizes the exchange and reduces its emotional weight for everyone involved.
Receiving feedback well is, if anything, harder than giving it. The natural response to critique is self-protection: explaining, defending, deflecting, or dismissing. None of those responses help you learn. The useful response to negative feedback is curiosity — asking for specifics, checking whether the observation matches your own self-assessment, and deciding, after reflection, whether it is accurate and worth acting on. Not all feedback is right. But the habit of considering it seriously before accepting or rejecting it is what separates people who grow from those who stagnate.
Feedback cultures in organizations depend on people at every level modeling both skills. When leaders receive feedback with openness and act on it visibly, it signals that honest feedback is safe to give. When leaders give feedback clearly, specifically, and without cruelty, it sets a standard for the whole organization. The individual who develops both skills — and uses them consistently — contributes something genuinely useful to any team they are part of.
