Vice President JD Vance delayed a planned trip to Switzerland to lead a new round of nuclear negotiations with Iran, citing difficult logistics, raising questions about the durability of the interim agreement to end the war between the two countries, according to The Associated Press.

According to the AP, a White House statement said the Vance-led team had been set to travel but would not depart as scheduled, citing logistical difficulties. The delay came after Al-Mayadeen, a pan-Arab satellite network allied with the Iranian-backed group Hezbollah, reported that Iran was holding back its own delegation in response to Israel's continuing military operations in Lebanon.

The postponement came after the U.S. lifted its naval blockade, allowing oil tankers to move through the Strait of Hormuz for the first time in months. President Donald Trump signed the interim pact while dining with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles, according to the AP. The deal extends a ceasefire and gives each side 60 days to negotiate broader agreements, including the fate of Iran's nuclear program.

Earlier this week, Vance appeared at the White House to defend the agreement, saying Iran would receive economic relief only in exchange for changed behavior. "As they dial up their good behavior, we can dial up the economic relief," Vance said, according to ABC News.

Those comments drew scrutiny because the memorandum of understanding allows Iran to export crude oil immediately upon signing, generating what experts estimated could exceed $60 billion annually in revenue, according to ABC News. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said Iran "took Trump to the cleaners," while Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy said Iran was left stronger and the U.S. weaker, according to ABC News.

What happens to Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium is among the questions left for the 60-day negotiating period to resolve, according to the AP. By comparison, the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action took well over a year and a half to reach, drawing on a large team of technical specialists and repeated high-level engagement from senior officials including Secretary of State John Kerry.

Earlier this week in Doha, American and Iranian officials communicated through Pakistani and Qatari go-betweens rather than meeting directly, with no senior-level or in-person sessions on the agenda, the New York Times reported. Trump struck an upbeat tone when asked about the proceedings, telling reporters at Joint Base Andrews that the parties had enjoyed "very good meetings" while declining to elaborate.

Update, July 3, 2026: Iran has issued new threats against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, raising fresh concerns over global oil supplies. The threats come even as the U.S. had previously lifted its naval blockade allowing oil tankers to transit the strait. (per The Washington Post)
