Wendy's $WEN announced a partnership with Illumination tied to the upcoming animated film "Minions & Monsters," introducing a limited-time adult meal, a new Banana Frosty Swirl, and exclusive collectibles at restaurants across the country.
Starting June 15, customers ordering the adult Minions & Monsters Meal can choose between a Big Bacon Classic and a Spicy Chicken Sandwich, served alongside small Hot & Crispy Fries and a small Banana Frosty Swirl, with one of four blind-box collectibles included, the company said. To create the Banana Frosty Swirl, Wendy's folds a banana cream sauce into its classic Vanilla Frosty base. Two themed Coca-Cola $KO Freestyle beverages — Pineapple Minion MischieFizz and Goomi's Glimey Lime — round out the promotional lineup.
The Kids' Meal, already on sale at Wendy's restaurants nationwide, comes with one of six movie-themed toys — James, Henry, Ed, and Richard represent the Minions, while Goomi and Dort round out the character lineup.
Fans in Los Angeles can get an early preview of the adult meal on June 11 through a themed drive-thru experience at the Wendy's on East Imperial Highway in Norwalk, California, the company said.
"By bringing together one of the world's most beloved entertainment franchises with Wendy's iconic, high-quality food our customers love, we're creating shared experiences that fans will go bananas for this summer," U.S. Chief Marketing Officer Lindsay Radkoski said in a statement.
"Minions & Monsters" arrives in theaters July 1. The film follows the Minions as they conquer Hollywood, become movie stars, and then attempt to save the planet from monsters they unleashed, the company said.
The promotion comes as Wendy's works through a difficult stretch for its U.S. business. The chain reported a 7.8% decline in U.S. same-restaurant sales in its most recent quarter, even as total revenue rose 3.3% to $540.6 million and results came in ahead of Wall Street's expectations. The company described itself as being in the early stages of a turnaround. Wendy's also appointed Robert "Bob" Wright as president and CEO effective May 21, ending a nearly year-long leadership search.
All items in the Minions & Monsters promotion are available for a limited time at participating U.S. Wendy's locations while supplies last, the company said.
