US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been hospitalized following a fall in her office last night (Nov. 7). After a night of discomfort, the justice went to the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC.
“Tests showed that she fractured three ribs on her left side and she was admitted for observation and treatment,” a spokesperson for the court said.
Ginsburg, 85, famously works out twice a week with an ex-military personal trainer, who guides her through an hour-long workout consisting of cardio, weight training, and core exercises.
Unfortunately, she isn’t a stranger to health problems: In 2012, she broke two ribs. In 2104, she underwent stent surgery to open a blocked artery. She has also had two occurrences of cancer.
The accident will prevent Ginsburg from attending the inauguration ceremony for the court’s latest appointee, Brett Kavanaugh, which will be attended by Donald Trump and Matthew Whitaker, who replaced Jeff Sessions as Attorney General yesterday.
Ginsburg is the most senior justice in the court’s four-member liberal minority. If she is forced to step down, the Trump administration could solidify the court’s conservative majority for decades.
