India’s cafe chain war has a clear winner—and by a massive margin.

Cafe Coffee Day (CCD), the coffee chain operated by Coffee Day Global Ltd, and the largest in India has almost nine times more outlets than Barista, owned by Carnation Hospitality, the second biggest.

A research report by Technopak, a retail consultant says that CCD had around 1,480 outlets as of December 2014. At second spot was Barista, with 169 outlets. By 2016, CCD aims to add 150 more stores, the report said.

The chain cafe market in India is worth Rs1,820 crore ($292.6 million). This constitutes around 27% of the overall café market valued at Rs6,750 crore ($1.1 billion), according to Technopak. Any brand with more than three outlets is considered to be a chain.

With Starbucks expanding at an unprecedented pace, the competition has intensified further. Even quick service restaurants like McDonald’s are entering the coffee chain market with McCafe and have plans to set up around 50-75 cafes by December this year.

This chart sums up the cafe race in the country.
