Normally, images showing a crowd being hosed down might seem alarming, perhaps violent. But in the case of La Tomatina, the massive annual summer food fight in Buñol, Spain, they’re actually gleeful.

Each year on the last Wednesday in August, thousands visit this town in Valencia to throw somewhere between 150 and 175 tons of squashed tomatoes at each other. The subject of today’s (Aug. 26) adorable Spanish Google Doodle, it’s a tradition thought to have origins in a real food fight between two boys in 1945.
