Chinese president Xi Jinping landed in Seattle yesterday (Sept. 22) to begin his long-awaited first US state visit. Accompanying his arrival was this bizarre video, posted on YouTube by People’s Daily, the Chinese newspaper often called the “mouthpiece“ of the Communist Party.
The three-minute video—which was initially inaccessible in China, given that YouTube and Twitter are blocked, until it was later posted on the People’s Daily website—features international students in Beijing fawning over Xi in a manner that can only be described as forced or off-key.
“Everybody looks at him and they just like him,” says a young man who identified himself as “Benedikt” from Austria.
Another student, a young woman from Korea claims, “If my husband is like him, I will be happy.”
