Sunday Oliseh, the chief coach of Nigeria’s “Super Eagles” national soccer team, has resigned from his post after just seven months in the job.
Oliseh, 41, a midfielder during his playing career, has had a bumpy relationship with the country’s sports administrators and at times with fans as the team’s results have fallen below expectations. For Oliseh’s part, he complained the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had failed to honor contract terms or pay benefits to players and the coaching staff including himself.
Despite that, he caught most Nigerians off guard when he tweeted in the early hours today (Feb. 26) that he was stepping down from a role he has often said he is honored to have.
It is not yet clear whether the NFF will accept his resignation or try to persuade him to stay. But in the meantime he’s already changed his Twitter bio to “ex-chief coach.”
It isn’t the first time Oliseh has taken to Twitter to tackle his critics, including fans.
Oliseh’s most famous individual moment as a player was at the 1998 World Cup in France when he scored the winning goal against Spain.
