In November 2014, 28-year-old Akai Gurley—a devoted son, doting father, and kind-hearted fiancé—was killed by a bullet fired from the gun of rookie New York Police Department officer Peter Liang. Two weeks ago, Liang was found guilty of second-degree manslaughter and official misconduct for his part in Gurley’s death, and subsequently fired by the NYPD.
Over the weekend, 16-year-old Mira Hu went missing in San Marino, California. Hu—a student at San Marino High School—had been dropped off at nearby Arcadia High School on Saturday to take the SAT college entrance exam. However, when her parents arrived to pick her up, Hu was nowhere to be found: hours later, she sent a text message to her brother that said Hu was running away due to the pressure of her SAT exam performance and the college admissions process. (Thankfully, she turned up unharmed, police reported on Tuesday.)
Three years ago, Ellen Pao—former junior partner of Silicon Valley venture capital group Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers—filed a lawsuit against her former employers, citing a culture of gender bias and sexual harassment targeting female employees. Earlier last week, lawyers in her suit against Kleiner completed their closing statements with a plea for greater efforts to address gender equality in the tech industry. And on Mar. 27, a jury failed to find Kleiner Perkins liable in Pao’s lawsuit.
