One woman was killed and at least 16 others were injured, some in critical condition, after a driver plowed a minivan into crowds at Berlin's annual gay Pride parade Saturday night, prompting police to launch a manhunt for the suspect.
The Christopher Street Day parade, which had drawn hundreds of thousands of people into central Berlin, was the setting for the assault, according to The New York Times. Earlier that evening, festivalgoers had gathered for a concert near the Brandenburg Gate and the adjacent Tiergarten park. Just after 10 p.m., a white minivan barreled down a side street away from the park and struck a tree; the man behind the wheel then fled the scene. Footage circulating online captured the vehicle's crumpled front end and badly damaged body.
Some of those injured sustained stab wounds, The Times reported. Authorities said they were treating the incident as a possible act of terrorism.
