Frito-Lay has initiated a recall for 6,344 bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips due to the presence of undeclared milk, a significant allergen. The recall, which began on Dec. 13, 2024, applies specifically to 13-ounce bags sold in Oregon and Washington. The recalled products carry the “Guaranteed Fresh” date of February 11, 2025, with the UPC code 6 81131 32884 5 and the Lot Code: BFFG327A6 on the front of the bag.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has elevated the recall to a Class I level — indicating the highest risk category. This classification is reserved for products that have the potential to cause serious adverse health effects or even death. Despite this categorization, Frito-Lay has not reported any illnesses related to the contaminated products as of the announcement.

Consumers, especially those with milk allergies, are advised to check their Lay’s Classic Potato Chips for the specific batch codes and dispose of them if they match the identified recall numbers. These products were primarily distributed through Walmart stores in the northwest. Customers can seek a refund by returning the affected bags.

Coca-Cola, the parent company of Frito-Lay, issued an apology for the oversight and emphasized their commitment to consumer safety and satisfaction. Although experts suggest that severe health effects are unlikely, the presence of an undeclared allergen remains a serious regulatory concern.

The initial discovery resulted from a consumer query, leading Frito-Lay to verify and confirm the presence of undeclared milk ingredients. The escalation to a Class I recall underscores the FDA’s rigorous standards and its role in safeguarding public health by preventing potential allergenic exposure from mislabeled food products.

Besides Lay’s Classic Potato Chips, no other Lay’s products, flavors, or sizes have been impacted by this recall. The focus remains on ensuring that all potentially harmful products are urgently retracted from store shelves and consumer homes.

Providing timely customer service support is a key part of Frito-Lay’s response strategy, aiming to minimize inconvenience while prioritizing safety.

As a response to the situation, Frito-Lay has enhanced its quality-check procedures to prevent such incidents in the future. Manufacturers routinely undertake preventive measures and thorough assessments to mitigate the risk of allergen mislabeling.
