The Weekend Brief offers analysis and insights on one big news item of the week, delivered only to Quartz members.
With the global demand for computer chips continuing to skyrocket, the U.S. is spending billions to lead that future.
At its peak, the U.S. produced more than a third of the world’s chips, but that was three decades ago. Since then, the likes of China, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan have all taken a larger share.
In 2020, the U.S. was responsible for only 12% of global chip-making capacity, with estimates showing that share would drop to 6% and the country would basically be left fighting for the scraps. Two years ago, the CHIPS and Science Act was passed partly to reverse that trend.
The Weekend Brief will dive into the progress the Biden administration has made with the CHIPS Act, the companies aiming to build up America’s chip market share, and the history of computer chips themselves.
