Hi members!
This week, we took a hard look at corporate boards. Here’s what we covered:
- Our state of play memo examined the past, present, and future of corporate boards, and asked if a millennia-old model is sufficient for governing the modern corporation.
- Our roster surveyed the different groups of investors and companies that are trying to influence or control corporate boards.
- Our Q&A was with two researchers who want to solve the corporate-board problem in a simple way—just get rid of the people.
- Our essay asked if serving on a corporate board is as fun as it used to be, and posed the questions any prospective board member should be asking of the company they intend to oversee.
- Our infographic looked at the effort to close the gender gap on boards. While progress has been made, it’s still got a long way to go.
We also had our business-book primer, this week on the small-business bible, Company of One, by Paul Jarvis. Our resident economist, Allison Schrager, looked at the world of sex workers and why legalization is the sensible response.
Today is also our live, members-only video conference call about corporate boards, with Quartz at Work editor, Heather Landy. Come ready to ask questions! The 30-minute call will start at 11 am ET/3 pm GMT at this link. If you use Google Calendar, you can add the call to your calendar here. Login info is in the invitation. If you’re on another calendar, don’t worry—we’ll be adding more integrations in the weeks ahead.
If you want to join us by phone, the US dial-in is +1 888 240 2560, and the UK dial-in is +44 203 608 5256; for both numbers, the meeting code is 722 994 440.
Next week, we’ll be tackling a pretty easy subject: immortality, and the race to create an eternal self. No big deal or anything.
We want to hear from you! Please send comments, questions, and slates of nominees to members@qz.com.
Here’s to a rewarding day,
Sam Grobart
