Dear members—

2020 will be the year of the streaming wars. Yes, I know, it feels like 2019 was the year of the streaming wars, too—and 2018 before that. But 2020 will be different. The year begins with Apple and Disney newly in the streaming mix, and NBC and WarnerMedia plan to launch this spring. The worldwide battle for viewers will only intensify.

This week’s presentation for members provides a short primer on the streaming wars, from the rapid rise of Netflix’s streaming business, to a new crop of competitors in the US, to the local competitors vying for viewers in India, Nigeria, South Africa, and China.

Netflix may have more competition, but it begins 2020 in an enviable position. It claims 158 million subscribers worldwide, as of September, nearly four times the subscribers of second-place Amazon.

LONG HOURS

There is a right way and a wrong way to work nights and weekends, says Quartz’s Sarah Todd. Although we’re often told that working long hours is part of a successful career, 60-hour workweeks will burn you out and don’t necessarily lead to promotions or even to getting more done.

So what’s an ambitious, would-be workaholic to do? Sarah suggests spending that time on side projects which are both more interesting and can often do more for your career. Of course, not everyone can afford to take this advice. If you’re working a second job for extra income, you won’t have time to put toward writing a novel or building an app. But if you find yourself wishing you were working longer hours—strange, but it happens—consider starting a new project instead of staying late at the office.

TAMING TIME

I hope you’ve enjoyed this week’s field guide on taming time and getting more done. Join Quartz at Work editor Heather Landy, author of this week’s state of play on time, at 11am ET today for a discussion of how to spend time better.

On today’s conference call, Heather will discuss the difference between clock time and event time, how to avoid digital distractions, why a distracted workforce is a management failure, and more.

We’ll be taking questions and comments live on the video conference call at this time, accessible at the usual location. You can also send questions in advance to members@qz.com.

If you’d like to dial in, use the following numbers:

UK: 0800-014 8469
USA: 866-226 4650

For all of the numbers, the access code is 722 994 440. And you can find recordings of our past video calls here.

With best wishes for a relaxing and thought-filled weekend.
