Dear members—

This week Quartz’s Daniel Wolfe published a series of audio clips of ambient sounds from US national parks. They’ve become an essential part of my work routine: I listen to them between video calls to stay both calm and focused. My favorite is from Wyoming’s Grand Teton.

I hope you’ll give them a listen. And send me an email about how you’re maintaining routines in these difficult and unusual times.

SCIENCE SLOWDOWN

Scientific collaboration is a critical part of globalization and important to the spread of knowledge. But some scientists in the US say they worry that openness is threatened—specifically by the FBI’s recent efforts to investigate US researchers who have ties to China.

In the latest episode of Because China, Quartz’s Isabelle Niu and Tony Lin investigate how the FBI’s increased scrutiny is partly a response to the legitimate threat of economic espionage, involving the theft of trade secrets and proprietary research intended to benefit Chinese companies and the Chinese government. But some Chinese American scientists say the investigations have created a climate of fear, and discourage ongoing, above-board scientific collaborations with China.

You can watch the episode here, and past episodes of Because China here.

REMOTE WORK

For obvious reasons, we’ve been covering remote work even more than usual, and we’ve compiled our most important resources for you in one reading list, exclusively for Quartz members.

We’ve also published a new presentation all about remote work, which we encourage you to share with your colleagues. It’s full of tips for navigating work in this period of social distancing, including how to be productive, how to unplug, and how to be a good manager of distributed teams.
