A federal safety notice has prompted Ford $F to pull back 140,201 of its Ranger trucks from U.S. roads, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warning that faulty wiring poses a fire hazard that could injure occupants or contribute to a crash.
According to NHTSA, the root cause involves wiring harnesses connected to the sun visor or headliner that were either routed incorrectly or wrapped with too much tape, placing stress on the wires and making damage more likely. The fire risk is localized to the A-pillar area of the vehicle.
As part of the remedy, authorized service centers will run a software update to the body control module and examine the affected wiring; any harnesses found to be compromised will be swapped out, NHTSA said.
