General Motors $GM is laying off 500 to 600 salaried employees in its information technology operations as the automaker works to reshape its workforce and reduce costs.
Management began notifying affected workers Monday, according to Bloomberg. Austin, Texas, and Warren, Michigan bear the brunt of the job losses, with additional reductions reaching across GM's worldwide operations, CNBC reported.
"GM is transforming its Information Technology organization to better position the company for the future. As part of that work, we have made the difficult decision to eliminate certain roles globally. We are grateful for the contributions of the employees affected and are committed to supporting them through this transition," the automaker said in a statement.
Recruitment in the technology division has not stopped entirely — a search of GM's careers website turns up 82 unfilled IT roles spanning areas such as artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, and motorsports.
At year-end, GM's salaried headcount stood at roughly 68,000 worldwide, with approximately 47,000 of those positions based in the United States, the company has said.
Periodic white-collar workforce reductions have become a recurring pattern at GM. Last October, CNBC reported that more than 200 engineers working in Computer-Aided Design were let go, with the company pointing to prevailing business conditions as the reason.
