Corey Ruiz, a Madison, Wisconsin man in his 30s, died Wednesday after being shot by a Madison police officer who authorities say acted following a confrontation in which Ruiz drew a knife on four officers, according to NBC News.
The incident began when a call came in about bicycle theft and someone trying vehicle door handles in the Marquette neighborhood. Ruiz took off on a bike when officers approached, cutting through residential backyards; he was eventually cornered at South Baldwin and Williamson Streets. In the intersection, Ruiz and officers came to blows; at some point he drew a fixed-blade knife, wounding one of them, according to NBC News. An attempt to subdue Ruiz with a Taser failed, after which the officer who had been cut opened fire, according to NBC News. Emergency responders attempted resuscitation at the scene; Ruiz did not survive and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
