OCOOPA Direct is recalling approximately 1.5 million rechargeable hand warmers after the lithium-ion batteries in certain models were found to overheat and ignite, posing a risk of serious injury or death, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced on Thursday.
OCOOPA Direct, a brand operated by Shenzhen Street Cat Technology Co., Ltd. of China, tallied 1,480 complaints of the hand warmers overheating; those incidents produced 15 fires and left 350 people with burn injuries, the CPSC reported. The incidents include the death of an 83-year-old consumer in San Diego, California in February 2026.
The recall covers seven models: UT3053, UT3056, ZLS-118, ZLS-118S, ZLS-118D, H01, and H01(PD). The dual-sided, rechargeable hand warmers were sold in packs of two that can magnetically be joined, and include a USB-C charging cable. Each unit is built around a hard plastic shell housing LED indicator lights and comes with a silicone lanyard; the brand name "OCOOPA" appears on the top face of the device. The CPSC noted that the model number and a three-digit batch number can be found stamped on the bottom of each unit.
Consumers who own the recalled devices should stop using them immediately and contact OCOOPA Direct for a full refund, either as an OCOOPA gift card or in the original form of payment, the CPSC said. To claim a refund, consumers must write "RECALLED" in permanent marker on the hand warmer and submit a photo showing that marking, the model number, and the three-digit batch number at ocoopa.com/pages/product-recalls.
The CPSC cautioned owners against discarding the recalled units in household trash, curbside recycling, or the used-battery drop boxes found at retail locations. Consumers should contact their municipal household hazardous waste collection center for guidance on proper disposal, or reach out to their municipality if the center does not accept defective lithium-ion batteries.
