Chaac Pizza Northeast says the Dragontail platform gave DoorDash drivers visibility into kitchen operations, causing delays and a sales collapse

A lawsuit filed May 6 in Texas Business Court puts Chaac Pizza Northeast — a franchisee running roughly 111 Pizza Hut locations spanning New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania — at the center of a dispute over a mandatory AI delivery platform, with the company seeking damages exceeding $100 million.
Named as a defendant alongside Pizza Hut is its parent, Yum! Brands. At the heart of the complaint is Dragontail, an AI-driven delivery management tool whose mandatory adoption, Chaac contends, handed DoorDash drivers live insight into kitchen activity and order scheduling — ultimately producing what the filing describes as "cascading operational breakdowns and customer dissatisfaction."
That visibility into kitchen timing gave Dashers an incentive to hold off on pickups, the suit contends, letting them consolidate multiple orders before departing — a wait the complaint quantifies at up to 15 minutes per stop. Chaac further claims the system exposed tip values and payment types to drivers, which the complaint says discouraged some from accepting lower-value or cash orders. The complaint also accuses Pizza Hut of leaving operators without adequate instruction on how to use Dragontail and of turning away requests for help even as delivery numbers deteriorated.
Prior to Dragontail's 2024 deployment, the franchisee describes itself as a high performer: delivery times placed better than 90% of orders at customers' doors within half an hour, and both sales growth and satisfaction ratings outpaced the broader Pizza Hut system by double digits. New York City locations tell the sharpest story in the complaint: annual sales growth that had been running at roughly positive 10% flipped to nearly negative 10% once Dragontail went live. Requiring franchisees to keep using Dragontail without adjusting it to fit operators like Chaac — which relies heavily on DoorDash for deliveries — amounted to a breach of the franchise agreement, the suit argues, because it reflected a failure of sound business judgment on Pizza Hut's part.
"With the intention to improve efficiency and service to the customer, Dragontail did the exact opposite," the complaint states. "It caused significant delays and pummeled consumer satisfaction."
Pizza Hut told Business Insider in an emailed statement that it was evaluating the allegations and intended to address them through proper legal channels, without elaborating further.
The lawsuit arrives as Pizza Hut faces pressure across its U.S. business. As Quartz has previously reported, the chain's U.S. same-store sales fell 4% in the most recent quarter, with global same-store sales flat and operating profit down 14%. Yum! Brands said earlier this year it would explore strategic options for Pizza Hut, including a possible sale, and has recorded about $37 million in charges tied to that review. During a February earnings call, Yum! Brands disclosed it would shut roughly 250 domestic Pizza Hut restaurants before the midpoint of the year.
