The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert for a mislabeled chicken breast product sold at Kroger and Fred Meyer stores in nine states, warning that the packaging fails to disclose eggs as an allergen.

The affected packages weigh 21 ounces and are labeled as Private Selection Honey Dijon Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts with Rib Meat. Shoppers can spot these by looking for three details on the packaging: a best-if-used-by date of June 28, 2026, lot code "15326A," and establishment number "P-45288B," according to the FSIS.

The error traces back to a labeling mix-up discovered by an employee: the reverse side of the package displays ingredient information belonging to Private Selection Teriyaki Skirt Steak rather than the Honey Dijon chicken product, according to Allrecipes. Because the wrong back label was applied, no egg allergen declaration appears anywhere on the package.

The FSIS said the product was sold at Kroger and Fred Meyer stores in nine states: Alabama, Alaska, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Oregon, and Washington. While the product has been removed from store shelves and no formal recall was needed, some people may still have it at home.

At the time of the alert, the FSIS had not received any reports of illness linked to the product. People with egg allergies who eat the chicken could have reactions, including anaphylaxis. Emergency warning signs include hives, trouble breathing or speaking, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, severe stomach pain, and diarrhea. If you do not have an egg allergy or sensitivity, you do not need to take any action. The chicken is not considered unsafe, and the FSIS alert is only because of the labeling error.

The FSIS recommends that anyone who has the affected packages should either throw them away or return them to the store for a full refund. For more questions, you can contact FW Farms LLC's customer service at [email protected].

The Kroger chicken alert follows a separate FSIS action earlier this month. Power Plate Meals LLC recalled approximately 5,795 pounds of frozen meatloaf with garlic mashed potatoes after inspectors found the products contained undisclosed soy, another federally designated major allergen. Mislabeled allergens have been a leading driver of food recalls across the country, the FSIS has noted.
