Volkswagen is recalling 38,710 model-year 2025 and 2026 Taos SUVs over a fuel pressure sensor defect that can increase the risk of fire in a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The defect centers on a fuel pressure sensor that, when subjected to the forces of a rear-end crash, can break free from the fuel tank and allow fuel to escape. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 301, the federal benchmark covering fuel system integrity, is cited in the recall notice as the requirement these vehicles no longer meet.

The remedy involves a dealership visit where technicians will fit the vehicle with a fuel pressure sensor wiring harness extension, with all costs covered by Volkswagen. Owner notification letters are scheduled to go out in the mail on June 19, USA TODAY reports. Starting April 29, owners can enter their vehicle identification number into the NHTSA.gov database to confirm whether their vehicle is included. Volkswagen is not alone in managing a significant recall load in recent years. Ford $F, General Motors $GM, Stellantis $STLA, Toyota $TM, Honda $HMC, Kia, and Tesla $TSLA were among the automakers that faced some of the highest recall volumes across the industry through the first nine months of 2025, with fuel system defects among the issues that prompted action.
