Wendy's $WEN launched a Sonic the Hedgehog Kids' Meal at participating U.S. restaurants on Monday, offering customers a set of collectible trading cards tied to the video game franchise's 35th anniversary, the company said.
Customers can participate through early September via participating restaurants, the Wendy's app, or Wendys.com, with availability subject to supply. Each Kids' Meal comes with one of seven character card cases, and each case contains five trading cards, for a total of 35 cards across all sets. The seven character sets feature Sonic the Hedgehog, Amy Rose, Miles "Tails" Prower, Silver the Hedgehog, Knuckles the Echidna, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Rouge the Bat.
Food options for the meal span two-piece chicken tenders, four-piece chicken nuggets, a hamburger, or a cheeseburger as the entrée, with Jr. Hot & Crispy Fries or apple bites on the side and a kids' drink included, the company said. Character offerings may vary by location.
The partnership with Sega, the publisher behind the Sonic franchise, came to the U.S. after a version of the promotion launched in the U.K. earlier this year, the company said.
Wendy's has been leaning on promotional partnerships as part of a broader effort to reverse a prolonged sales slump. The chain reported a 7.8% decline in U.S. same-restaurant sales in its most recent quarter and described itself as being in the early stages of a turnaround. Robert "Bob" Wright took over as president and CEO in May, ending a leadership search that stretched nearly a year, and the company named Steve Cirulis as chief financial officer and chief strategy officer in June.
Earlier this summer, Wendy's introduced a Minions & Monsters adult meal tied to Illumination's animated film and a new Banana Frosty Swirl. The Sonic Kids' Meal marks the chain's second major promotional partnership of the summer.
The chain's global footprint exceeds 7,000 locations, the company said.
