SpaceXAI — formerly xAI, and before that X $TWTR.AI Corp. — is the artificial intelligence division of SpaceX, the American spaceflight company controlled by Elon Musk. It operates in AI development and social media, and its flagship products are Grok, a generative AI chatbot, and X, the social network formerly known as Twitter. SpaceX acquired xAI in an all-stock transaction on Feb. 2, 2026, valuing xAI at $250 billion and the combined SpaceX-xAI entity at $1.25 trillion.
Musk founded xAI on March 9, 2023, alongside a team of 11 AI researchers, several of them formerly associated with Google $GOOGL DeepMind. The company was publicly announced on July 12, 2023. It was initially incorporated in Nevada as a public-benefit corporation, a status it dropped by May 2024. Before the SpaceX acquisition, the entity was known as X.AI Corp., and it operated as a standalone company headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Grok, xAI's primary product, launched in November 2023 as an AI chatbot integrated with X and initially restricted to X Premium+ subscribers. Subsequent model releases — including Grok-1.5, Grok-2, and Grok-3 — added capabilities such as image generation, web search, and image editing.
