Although his father, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, called Russia America’s “number one geopolitical foe,” Matt Romney travelled to Moscow in an attempt to raise funds from the country’s sovereign wealth funds. The younger Romney is hoping, not unreasonably, that investors abroad are interested in putting money into the US, which remains among the strongest developed economies. But the trip does underscore the differences between the complex reality of the US-Russia relationship and the Romney campaign’s description of the situation.
