Scotland voted to stay in the United Kingdom, and by a surprisingly wide margin. If you were watching social media as the vote came to a close, however, that outcome didn’t look likely.
Quartz gathered thousands of referendum-related tweets from the British Isles throughout the final three hours of voting. The map above shows where those tweets came from, and whether they were “yes” or “no” on independence.
During the closing hours in Scotland, “yes” advocates far outnumbered their opponents on our map. #VoteYes was beating #BetterTogether. But it wasn’t enough, and the United Kingdom will remain as it was. For now.
