Why 100 impeccably dressed black men welcomed these kids to school

It takes little.

To fight racial stereotypes, start with education. On Aug. 25, two men from Hartford, Connecticut organized a flash mob of sorts at a local elementary school, bringing 100 black men in suits to greet children on their first day of class.

The campaign, called ”Calling All Brothers,” was launched by Pastor AJ Johnson and DeVaughn Ward. ”The way our country and leadership portrays black men is disturbing,” Johnson told Quartz. The gathering of elegantly-dressed men, he said, was one way to redress that.

Martin Luther King Jr Elementary School lies in an underprivileged area of Hartford, where the rate of income inequality is one of the highest in the country. When the students got off their school buses, the men were there to welcome them. The kids reacted excitedly, some high-fiving the special guests.
