Nothing says “I love books” like a snarl and a face full of paint.

For the UK’s World Book Day—celebrated, true to form, on a completely different day than the rest of the world—kids go to school dressed up as book characters. The campaign, organized by publishers, booksellers, and literacy charity World Book Day Ltdis also honored today in Ireland and provides kids with free and discounted books in a celebration of reading and, occasionally, hair dye.

The result is an ocean of mini-Harry Potters—but a few families do depart from the usual. Here’s a sample of children whose parents perhaps did too good a job, and one who dropped the ball rather spectacularly.
