Dr. Pastore is a cardiologist in Boston and a Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island and is the son of the late U. S. Senator John O. Pastore (D-RI), who during his 26 years in the Senate chaired the Joint Congressional Committee on Atomic Energy. Senator Pastore was at President Kennedy’s side in 1963 when JFK signed the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.During his service years, Dr. Pastore was a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Public Health Service and a Research Internist with the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. He has published widely on the delayed effects of the atomic bombings on the Japanese hibakusha (survivors), and on the medical justification for the elimination of nuclear weapons.Dr. Pastore was an early Director of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War and was IPPNW’s Executive Secretary when the organization was awarded the 1985 Nobel Prize for Peace. Within IPPNW, he was responsible for liaison with the U. S. State Department, the U. S. Senate, the Vatican, the Archdiocese of Boston, and many other important policy shaping organizations. He has also served as the President of Physicians for Social Responsibility, the U.S. affiliate of IPPNW. Since 1969, Dr. Pastore has focused on the moral and ethical argument for the elimination of nuclear weapons. His motivating belief, fostered by decades of contact with political leaders, is that an informed and aroused citizenry can demand removal of the cataclysmic threat posed by nuclear weapons.Dr. Pastore and his wife Marilyn live in Winchester, Massachusetts and have three sons and eight grandchildren.
