Kanika Thakar
After seeing first hand the challenges that water insecurity pose to impoverished women and children in India, Kanika decided to re-direct her career toward achieving water security for all. Equipped with a master’s in integrated water resources management and a knack for communications, she set out to help bring voice to causes without and raise awareness for the silent plight of billions living without a toilet. Prior to joining SIWI, Kanika has supported the United Nations Environment Programme through the negotiations of the Sustainable Development Goals, launched online education tools for the Global Water Partnership, and helped several water and toilet related start-ups get off the ground. In addition to her role at SIWI, where she raises awareness and action in support of good water governance and sustainable water management, she runs #toilettalk, an NGO which aims to normalize the conversation around toilets and poo to drive political action. Her work with #toilettalk has been recognized by The Guardian as one of 10 steps needed to end open defecation by 2030. When Kanika is not talking the talk, she’s walking the walk, working with the Swedish Red Cross as an emergency disaster responder for water, sanitation and hygiene.
