Peter Gleick is a scientist, innovator, and communicator on water and climate issues. In 1987 he co-founded the independent thinktank Pacific Institute, which he led as president until mid-2016, when he became president emeritus. Gleick received the prestigious MacArthur “genius” Fellowship and is an elected member of the US National Academy of Sciences. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and winner of the Ven Te Chow Award from the International Water Resources Association and the United States Water Prize from the US Water Alliance. Gleick developed one of the earliest assessments of the consequences of climate change for water resources, assessed the risks of conflict over water, and helped to define basic water needs and the human right to water—work that has been used by the United Nations and in human-rights court cases. He has pioneered and advanced the concepts of the “soft path for water” and “peak water.” He is the author or co-author of many scientific papers and twelve books, including the series The World’s Water (Island Press, Washington), Bottled and Sold: The Story Behind our Obsession with Bottled Water (Island Press, Washington), and A 21st Century U.S. Water Policy (Oxford University Press, New York).
