The odds of winning this week's $1.25 billion powerball are one in 292,201,338. Those are pretty steep, but they're nothing compared to the ones Richard Davies and Faye Stevenson-Davies faced recently.
The couple won £1 million ($1.3 million in U.S. dollars) in the U.K. National Lottery in late November. That was the second win for the couple, who also won £1 million in a separate lottery in June 2018. The odds of that happening? 24-trillion-to-one.
Making this story even more encouraging is who won. Richard is a former hairdresser who now offers haircuts for the homeless. He also helps out friends as a delivery driver. Faye a former nurse who now works as a volunteer cook at a shelter and provides mental health counselling services to local charities. (She returned to university after the first win to get a second degree in Counseling and Therapeutic Practice.)
"The first time we won we gifted people cars, donated a minibus to the local rugby team, and did our best to help friends and family," the couple said. "It was all new and it was amazing to be able to make a difference. This time around, who knows? We're just going to take our time and enjoy the moment."
Richard, however, did say he plans to continue working as a courier driver – and for now plans to work seven days a week to ensure Christmas deliveries arrive on time. That's a bit different than after the first win. The couple's car broke down on their way to collect the winnings.
And yes, the couple says, they plan to keep playing. After all, good things often occur in threes.
