Hello, Quartz Index readers!
What a difference a week makes. Last Friday, we were mulling the long-term effects of US president Donald Trump’s travel ban from seven majority-Muslim countries. Then, a federal judge issued a temporary halt to the ban, and last night, an appeals court rejected the government’s emergency motion to reinstate the it; citizens from the affected countries can continue to enter the US.
More extensive hearings on the ban are expected next month, but the ruling is still a major setback for the Trump administration’s agenda.
Airline executives met with the president yesterday but did not discuss the ban, despite reports that they’d wanted to address the issue. Airlines have to refund tickets for passengers turned away from the US border, which has a significant impact on their business. Interest in travel to the US has plummeted since Trump took office, so the recent ruling could be a relief for US airline companies. —Molly Rubin
