Bollywood actresses dominate Instagram in India.
The top five spots on the list for the most followed Instagram accounts belong to Hindi film actresses—with Deepika Padukone in the lead with 4.5 million followers. Alia Bhatt with 4.1 million followers is a close second.
Like Facebook and Twitter, Instagram is often used by film celebrities to promote their upcoming releases. Chopra, who recently starred in the American television series, Quantico, actively used Instagram to promote her show. Her most liked post so far has been one of her promotional posts.
Alia Bhatt, in her most popular post, is seen endorsing apparel brand, Topshop.
Besides film and brand promotions, celebrities have taken to the photo-sharing platform to share details about their social life. For instance, Padukone’s most liked Instagram post is a two-photo collage of the outfit she wore for Aamir Khan’s film PK‘s success party.
Instagram users also loved photos of Sonam Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor with their fathers.
Young and rich
Indians on Instagram are young, mobile-first users with high spending power, according to a study conducted by the app and website in November. Their interests on the photo-sharing platform include Bollywood, fashion, travel and food. Almost 90% of the users in the country are aged below 30. And out of that, people between the age of 18 and 24 are the most active.
Though Facebook-owned Instagram did not reveal the actual number of users in India, its active monthly user base in July 2015 is estimated to be 5.9 million. Globally, the social media platform has grown to more than 400 million users this year—with 75% of users living outside of the US.
