The new account tiers, rolling out in early June, restrict game access and chat features based on verified age
Roblox $RBLX is introducing two age-based account types for users under 16, restricting access to games and chat features according to verified age. The accounts — Roblox Kids for ages 5 to 8 and Roblox Select for ages 9 to 15 — are set to roll out globally in early June.
Roblox Kids accounts will be limited to games carrying "Minimal" or "Mild" content maturity labels, and all chat functions will be disabled by default. Roblox Select accounts will allow access to games rated up to "Moderate" and will permit some communication. Users will automatically advance from one account tier to the next as they age, transitioning to a standard Roblox account at 16.
To be eligible for either younger account tier, a game's developer must clear a three-part vetting process: confirming their identity through ID verification, securing their account with two-step verification, and maintaining an active Roblox Plus subscription. A further layer of review involves players aged 16 and up testing games and submitting reports, giving Roblox behavioral data to assess each title before it opens to younger audiences. By default, games featuring sensitive issues, social hangouts, or free-form drawing will be excluded from both account types.
As part of the update, Roblox is also expanding parental controls. Through a child's 15th birthday, parents gain tools to restrict individual games and adjust direct messaging permissions. One addition lets parents manually unlock specific titles that would otherwise be off-limits — handy, for instance, when a child wants to join an older sibling in a game that sits above their account's default content level, according to TechCrunch.
The company said it plans to begin transitioning to the International Age Rating Coalition framework later this year, which would apply region-specific ratings such as ESRB in the U.S. and PEGI in much of Europe and the U.K.
The changes follow a wave of legal pressure. Among the legal actions are suits brought by the attorneys general of Louisiana and Texas, spurred by reports of young users being exposed to grooming and explicit material on the platform. Separate civil litigation has accused Roblox of failing to adequately protect young users from dangerous content and unwanted contact with adults.
Age verification became a requirement for chat access across the platform back in January. That same verification system will determine which of the new account tiers a given user is placed into. Until a user completes verification, access will be restricted to lower-rated content and all communication features will remain turned off.
The platform's daily active user count stands at over 150 million, a figure Roblox co-founder and CEO Dave Baszucki cited in a November 2025 appearance on CBS Mornings.
