Workers in Samsung's consumer division stand to receive about 6 million won in 2026 bonuses, versus up to 600 million won for semiconductor staff

Samsung's consumer electronics and mobile workers are planning a rally near the company's Suwon headquarters on July 16 to protest a bonus arrangement that pays chip division employees up to 100 times more than their non-semiconductor colleagues, according to Reuters.
Yonhap News Agency put the expected turnout at somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 people. The union organizing the demonstration, which covers workers in Samsung's mobiles and consumer electronics division, has about 28,000 members.
The bonus disparity driving the protest is stark. For 2026, workers on the consumer side — making everything from smartphones to televisions to home appliances — are looking at a bonus of approximately 6 million won, equivalent to around $3,900, distributed as treasury shares. Chip division employees, by contrast, are eligible for payouts reaching as high as 600 million won.
The chip workers secured that payout through a separate union and a separate negotiation concluded in May. Under the terms Samsung accepted, roughly 10.5% of the semiconductor division's operating profit must flow to workers as special bonuses — a profit-sharing structure written into a binding contract, which The Next Web noted has precedent at only one other major Korean company. The agreement runs for 10 years, contingent on the company meeting profit thresholds.
Samsung's chip bonus deal, struck in May after a threatened 18-day strike, was valued at an average payout of roughly 513 million won per worker, or about $340,000, based on analyst projections for 2026 operating profit. The strike threat carried real weight: a work stoppage at peak memory-chip demand could have cost the South Korean economy as much as 1 trillion won per day, with potential losses multiplying if in-progress semiconductor wafers were rendered unusable. Samsung's shipments account for nearly a quarter of all South Korean exports.
Before settling on a public demonstration, the Donghaeng union — which represents workers outside the chip division — filed a legal challenge in Suwon aimed at preventing a companywide vote from ratifying the bonus arrangement, according to The Next Web. That effort did not stop the deal.

The protesters' goal is to shape how Samsung approaches the next round of talks — arguing that profits generated by AI-fueled chip demand should be shared across the entire company, not funneled exclusively to one division.
